Former Colts Super Bowl XLI Champion Ricky Proehl Will Be Coaching Against Old QB Peyton Manning
Former Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl XLI Champion and current Carolina Panthers wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl will be coaching against his old Super Bowl winning quarterback Peyton Manning in Super Bowl 50.
According to the Arizona Republic, Proehl is presently perturbed about his wide receiver group’s lack of respect entering into Super Bowl Sunday:
"“It pisses me off, I ain’t going to lie to you,” said the 3rd-year wide receivers coach Proehl. “These guys have developed into such a great group that plays for each other, and I think that’s important.”“We know we lost a great receiver in Kelvin Benjamin,” Proehl added. “He brings so much to the table: size, strength, quickness. He’s a Number 1, plain and simple, and we don’t have that. But we have a group of guys who have a lot of grit, heart.”“I think that’s part of what I bring to the table, understanding who they are and what their strengths are and transferring that information to Coach Shula (offensive coordinator Mike Shula),” concluded Proehl."
While Proehl is more known for his prior playing day stops with the St. Louis Rams (1998-2002) and later the Carolina Panthers (2003-05), it’s easy to forget that his last career stop was actually with the Indianapolis Colts in 2006.
When slot receiver Brandon Stokley ruptured his achilles tendon late that season, the Colts quickly scooped up the 38 year old Proehl as a veteran insurance policy to man the inside receiving game.
The move didn’t exactly have much of an impact, as Proehl appeared in just 2 games for the Colts–recording 3 catches for 30 yards and was held without a catch during the team’s magical playoff run.
However, Proehl was still a part of that team, meaning he became a Super Bowl XLI Champion.
Now, he’ll be coaching on the sidelines against the very same quarterback who actually got him another elusive Super Bowl ring in Manning and threw him those 3 passes–which had to be totally worth it.
Funny how things work out.
