Johnny Unitas (1960-1972)

Unitas is the grandfather of the modern quarterback. The Colts of old used the vertical pass unlike any other team and Unitas played like a man out of time.

His numbers might not stand out compared to today’s, but he was revolutionary at the time. His performance in “The Greatest Game Ever Played” in 1958 is legendary and that game is credited with the spike in popularity for football heading into the 1960s.

Unitas held numerous records until the modern era of quarterbacking, chief among them being most wins (118) and most consecutive games with a passing touchdown (47). His record have since been broken, but most of them last over 30 years.
