Herron came into the Colts lineup following Bradshaw’s injury. Analysts longed for the day that Herron would backup Bradshaw in 2014, instead of Richardson, but it never really happened.

Herron is an explosive player who makes clear, decisive cuts up field. He also had one of the best plays of the season using a spin move to get a first down against the Browns.

Herron continued to show his value in the postseason where the Colts utilized him as a dump off receiver for Luck. It worked very well as Herron pulled in 20 passes for 128 yards.

Herron should have the inside track for the backup position. He proved his worth to the Colts late in the season and earned a roster spot at the bare minimum. Herron is also more familiar with the playbook than the rookie, and is healthier than the fourth option (likely much more explosive too).

Herron took first team reps during OTAs to give Gore a break. While it might change as the season progresses, expect Herron to be Gore’s backup on opening day.
