Colts Defensive Player of the Year: Vontae Davis
While
Vontae Davismay not have the same household name recognition as shutdown cornerbacks like
Darrelle Revisand
Richard Sherman, make no mistake about it, he’s every bit of the same mold. The former 2009 first round pick of the Miami Dolphins has caught fire with the Colts and has quickly become one of the best cornerbacks in the game under defensive-minded head coach
Chuck Pagano.According to
ProFootballFocus(subscription), the 7th-year pro not only had the 2nd lowest completion rate among all cornerbacks when targeted of 43.7, but he also had the lowest quarterback rating when targeted among all of his peers last season with a dismal 38.8 passer rating when targeted:
Passer rating when targeting Sherman in 2014: 48.4. Targeting Vontae Davis: 38.8. They make your QB look worse than Blake Bortles (PR 69.5)

Not to mention, Davis also had 4 interceptions to go along with his shutdown play.
After such an impressive season, Davis made his 1st career Pro Bowl. He was instrumental in the team’s divisional round win against the Denver Broncos, as he helped shut down the Denver Broncos receivers in a convincing victory. However, next season marks the opportunity to further cement himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the business and prove that last season was no fluke.
Quarterbacks may want to just throw the other way….
