OTAs: Laying the Foundation

On Monday, May 18th, the Indianapolis Colts begin laying the groundwork of their 2015 season. This is the beginning of that special time between the NFL Draft and Training Camp, a 9-week Organized Team Activities better known as OTA’s. The significance of OTA’s is underwhelming to most fans but critical to coaches and players.

It is this 9-week period where rookies, recently signed free-agents and the veteran members finally come together and where the team chemistry begins. The veterans begin mentoring the younger players and new leaders rise up in the locker room. The OTA’s are where the Colts will cement their team’s foundation and lock on their focus of bringing the Vince Lombardi trophy back to Indianapolis once again.

Coaches get their first look at their preseason roster and begin identifying the roles and niches each player might fit. While most of the roster is set and the incumbents are well-known, for some at the bottom of the roster the UDFAs and futures contract players  take this opportunity to lock themselves into potential special teams roles.

Additionally, the OTA’s are when the depth chart becomes a little more clear. Admittedly, training camp is when the depth chart is final but, the position battles begin during these OTA’s. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at five positions to watch before training camp begins in Anderson, IN.
