4. Solution at Safety
Incumbent: *Dwight Lowery
Challenger: Clayton Geathers
The Colts know that 12-year veteran Mike Adams will be starting at one of the safety positions, coming off a Pro Bowl season. However, the question remains who will be starting alongside him in the back of the team’s secondary.
While the team initially signed Dwight Lowery at safety earlier this offseason, the fact that the Colts just drafted Central Florida safety Clayton Geathers in the 4th round could potentially complicate matters. Don’t get me wrong, Lowery is still likely the favorite to man the other safety spot, as the 8 year veteran has proven NFL experience on his resume.
However, it wouldn’t necessarily surprise if Geathers pushes him a bit for the starting position. Nothing against Lowery, but he’s probably a stopgap solution for next season and ideally not the long-term answer at the safety position. On the other hand, a safety like Geathers could be.
If the competition is close, one would have to think that Geathers may get the nod due to his youth, upside, and the fact that he’s under cheap team control for several years to come.
