Colts Draft: Review, Grades and In-Depth Analysis
By Dave McKee
Round 4 Pick #10 – 109th Overall:
Analysis: The Colts finally picked their long awaited Safety Clayton Geathers in the 4th Round. Geathers size and play style are comparable to current Dallas Cowboys SS Barry Church.
I like the player, but considered him to be a later round pick. Its not a knock on Geathers as I had him projected to Indy’s scheme, but more as a 6th-7th round pick. Geathers is a solid run support safety with an additional tendency to drop the hammer on any receiver daring to cross over the middle of the field. However, he’s also very similar to Laron Landry in terms of going for that big impact instead of wrapping up the ball carrier.
Measurables: Geathers comes from an NFL pedigree and is another combine top performer selected by the Colts. He bested his position group in the Bench Press and Vertical Jump drills with 22 reps at 225lbs and a 37″ vertical jump respectively. Geathers also posted a decent 40-yard dash clocking in at 4.55 seconds. His marks at the Combine are indicative of a big body hard-hitting safety.
Scheme Fit: Geathers is a hard nosed box safety, who will do well in run support and has some coverage skills. While he may not be a day one starter, he has the opportunity to develop his game and contribute in sub-packages and special teams. I project him to compete as a gunner on the punt coverage especially. In time, the tutelage of Pagano could help Geathers to eventually take over the starting role if they can shore up his tackling angles and technique.
