Colts Meeting with FSU CB Ronald Darby
By Evan Reller
The Indianapolis Colts continue to prep for the draft with more interviews today. This time, they are working out Florida State cornerback Ronald Darby.
Darby is one of the top 5 to 10 cornerbacks in the this years draft, but where he lands depends on who you ask. ESPN has him ranked seventh at his position. Darby jumped up a number of draft boards as more analysts watched his film and following his combine workout. Most projections have him going in the second round.
Darby measures in at nearly 5-11 and 193 pounds. He made appearances in 42 games and started 23 of them over his three years as a Seminole. Darby amassed 79 tackles, 16 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two interceptions during his college career.
In 2012, Darby was named the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year (which really should be Freshman, but were splitting hairs). He was Third-Team All-ACC in 2014.
Darby is also a world class sprinter having won two medals in the 2011 World Youth Championship Athletics. He posted a 4.38 40-yard dash time at the NFL Scouting Combine, the second best among defensive backs.
Darby is excellent in coverage and has amazing instincts to go along with a short memory. While he sometimes gets burned, he has the speed to make up the distance and turn sure fire completions into well defended passes. Darby is generally great in coverage and quarterbacks often end up going to someone he isn’t covering.
In run support, Darby shows a willingness to commit stopping the ball carrier but isn’t a great tackler. He can also get swallowed up on blocks and give up on breaking free.
The Colts are in the market for depth at the cornerback position. Both Greg Toler and Vontae Davis have a bit of an injury history and the team doesn’t have much after Darius Butler, who struggles when opposite a primary receiver.
Toler is also in a contract year and 30 years of age. The team might be looking to move on from Toler after this season and finding his replacement in the draft would be ideal.
The Colts will likely pass on Dary with the 29th pick in the first round, but there is a good chance he’d still be available with the 61st pick in the second round.
