Colts Safety Sergio Brown Signs With Jaguars

According to NFL Insider Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports, former Indianapolis Colts safety Sergio Brown has signed with their AFC South rival in the Jacksonville Jaguars:

The 5th-year veteran has been a special teams ace and solid spot-starter at safety for the Colts over the past 3 seasons. Last year, in place of the suspended and ineffective LaRon Landry at starting safety, Sergio Brown made 8 starts and recorded 33 tackles.

While Brown was a useful piece, the Colts are expected to upgrade their safety position entirely. Re-signing Mike Adams remains a high priority for the team, but the Colts also have to find a starting caliber safety to play alongside him. Brown would’ve provided useful insurance behind either Adams or whoever else the team chooses to bring in. However, it looks as though he opted for a better contract and more opportunity for playing time with the Jaguars.

The 26-year old Brown was a fan favorite, especially for his post-game locker room celebrations that included “2 Claps and a Rick Flair”. We wish him well in his future career with the Jaguars, just not against the Colts. In all honesty, Brown should’ve probably kept his starting job over Landry in hindsight, as he was much more productive in that role.

Since being signed from the New England Patriots in the beginning of the 2012 season, Brown has been an invaluable special teams contributor for the Colts and reliable safety insurance. The former Notre Dame standout will now look to make his mark with the Jacksonville Jaguars. With his departure, the Colts will not only have to bolster their safety depth, but also find someone to replace Brown’s acclaimed locker room dances.

Big shoes to fill indeed.

Some teammates already were saddened to hear that Sergio Brown was leaving:
