Robert Mathis

2015 Contract: $7,750,000

The Good:

Mathis led the NFL in sacks in 2013. He’s also the Colts all-time leader in sacks (111). He provides veteran leadership on the field and demands a double team from opponents, effectively leaving other players open to get to opposing QBs.

The Bad:

Mathis was suspended for four games for PED use, leading many to wonder if his numbers from 2013 were due to steroid use. While on suspension, Mathis suffered a torn achilles which is a notoriously difficult injury to recover from. There is also a rumor he had a second surgery on it in December.

2015 Outlook:

Even if Mathis comes back 100-percent healthy, he’s still going to be 34 by the time the season starts. His best days are likely behind him and the Colts don’t have any other consistent pass rushers.

He’s still a great leader and has done a good job playing mentor to the likes of Newsome and Werner. His presence on the field will improve the defense, but how effective he is individually remains to be seen.
