Most Indianapolis Colts fans have one question on their mind. Who will the Colts draft? We’ve been covering a few individuals and positions lately. It seems like the Colts have been quiet on the matter. In fact they’ve been quiet on a lot of matters.

After Jim Irsay’s arrest and entrance into some type of treatment, the Colts organization has been silent. Don’t mistake silence for doing nothing. You can be guaranteed that the Colts are doing things. They are talking about potential free agents. They are reviewing their draft board and reviewing it again. There is a lot of work to be done behind the scenes this time of year. They can’t let their game plan get out. They don’t want other teams to know what they’re going to do next.

The Colts also have a new leader at the helm. Carlie Irsay-Gordon, daughter of Jim Irsay, has temporarily taken over the team in her father’s absence. There’s no telling how long she’ll be in charge, but I can guarantee you that she’s not taking it lightly and that she’s working just as hard as Jim would if he were able to be there.

Some silence broke recently as Chuck Pago spoke about the potential of drafting a safety. He stated that there were a lot of potential draft candidates for safety. He also expressed that he would like to get a young safety in the mix.

A young safety would be nice to replace Antoine Bethea. Bethea was recently signed by the San Francisco 49ers. He had a great veteran presence and no doubt offered great leadership for the younger defensive players. Right now the Colts have aren’t lacking in veteran leadership.

Players like Donald Thomas, Cory Redding, and Robert Mathis can provide great leadership for the young players. It would be smart to bring in a younger guy now to learn the Colts culture under these great leaders and performers.

A few days after Pago began talking about safeties news broke from Texas. The Houston Texans released their veteran safety Danieal Manning. Manning has had a good career but suffered a drop last year. He only played in six games due to a knee injury. Manning was due to make $4.5 million form the Texans but was released after refusing to restructure his deal.

Some Colts fans began wondering if he would soon visit Indianapolis. The chances of that are slim. With his age and recent injury, it would be hard for the Colts to justify spending so much money. It’s especially hard when they have safeties on roster and a deep draft to choose from.

Unless Manning drops his asking price don’t expect the Colts to give him any time. Even if he does drop his asking price, it’s hard to see how he fits into the Colts plans for this season or the near future. Instead look for the Colts to draft at least one safety in this draft.
