The Indianapolis Colts may have found a diamond in the rough, and that diamond’s name is Griff.

Rookie wide receiver Griff Whalen erupted on the NFL radar last week, during the Colts’ 25-3 victory over the Houston Texans. Not only did Whalen catch his first career NFL touchdown in that game, but he also made noise on special teams. Whalen totaled 89 yards in punt and kick returns, with a long punt return of 51 yards. Prior to last Sunday’s win, Whalen had totaled nine receptions for 102 yards, in four regular season games.

Whalen has had a wild 2013 season. Since coming to the Colts as an undrafted free agent, Whalen has been bounced from the practice squad to the starting roster several times. The rookie was added to the starting lineup at the start of the season, due to the suspension of WR – LaVon Brazill. When Brazill returned, Whalen went back to the practice squad. When WR – Reggie Wayne went down, Whalen was brought back. The rookie was waived again in November, just to be brought back in December.

Whalen played with QB – Andrew Luck and TE – Coby Fleener at Stanford University. With his big showing last Sunday, this young wide receiver might help become an extra added weapon for the 2103 AFC South champions.
