In case you weren’t previously aware, Indianapolis Colts’ OLB – Robert Mathis isn’t messing around.
In his 11th pro season, Mathis is breaking records left and right. Last Sunday, Mathis recorded his 108th career quarterback sack, a feat that only 20 other players in NFL recorded history have ever accomplished. That sack (of Houston Texans QB – Case Keenum) was also the 41st strip fumble of Mathis’ career, which extended his current NFL record. With that, also came a franchise-record 16.5 sacks on the season, which breaks a record set by former teammate Dwight Freeney. Mathis currently leads the league in sacks, and could be on his way to his sixth NFL Pro Bowl. Mathis was also named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month this October, which was the third time he has earned that honor. In that same respect, Mathis is well on his way to his first NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.
In 2013, the Indianapolis Colts’ defense has had its hills and valleys. Still, the solo emergence of Robert Mathis is undeniable. The NFL may have not been paying much attention to this future Hall of Fame player previously, but they can’t ignore what he’s doing in 2013.
