Photos: OLB Josh McNary Arrives to Colts Training Camp

After relaying the information that GM Ryan Grigson expected former Army Officer and pass rusher Josh McNary to be at training camp on Tuesday, well–he showed up.

You can see him there wearing number 48 and getting coached up by Chuck Pagano. Along with signing AFL star Caesar Rayford and rugby player Daniel Adongo, adding Josh McNary to the OLB mix gives the Colts probably the most intriguing roster battle of any team’s training camp if you’re really paying attention. Like Ryan Grigson has said, why not just have some guys out there who have upside rather than a few guys you know are going to get cut when training camp is over?

The Colts have opened up their OLB position to pretty much anyone who wants it, from draft picks to high priced free agents, to Army officers and rugby players.

McNary’s arrival was one of the most highly anticipated because the dude can seriously ball. At Army, he was a stellar pass rusher and freak in the gym, racking up 23.5 sacks, 35 tackles for loss, and six forced fumbles in his final two seasons (2009-10). He took two years off from football to focus on his obligations to the Army, but now is cleared to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL and now he’s got to quickly get up to speed. At worst, I think the Colts will be able to stash McNary on the practice squad unless he blows up in the pre-season, and they are forced to keep him.

This is an athlete worth keeping an eye on, and a guy who is worth developing. McNary caught the eye of the Colts’ scouting department at a regional combine in Texas, close to his home. It’s great to see him back out on the football field.
