Position Battles: Wide Receivers for the 2013 Indianapolis Colts

In 2012, the Indianapolis Colts went for offensive early and often in the NFL Draft. The 2013 draft had the Colts looking a bit more at the offensive line and the defensive side of the ball, but that did not cover up their attempts to add more weapons for Andrew Luck.

The reloaded roster of wide receivers took a hit, with this week’s news that second-year wide out LaVon Brazill was going to be suspended for the first for games of this season. Still, the Colts will have to roll on without Brazill, and his loss could end up being a chance for someone else to shine. It’s been said that new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton would like to focus more on the running game, but that fact does not discount the importance of having capable players to catch the ball when called upon.

The Colts currently have seven wide outs on their roster that are either in their first or second year in the league. In fact, other than Reggie Wayne and Darrius Heyward-Bey, there is no receiver on the roster that has more than five years of NFL experience. There is not enough space for all of these receivers to remain on the roster, so expect to see tough competition from this young talent in 2013.
