Justice Cunningham is “Mr. Irrelevant”

For the second season in a row, the Indianapolis Colts have acquired “Mr. Irrelevant” in the NFL Draft. The title of “Mr. Irrelevant” is tagged upon the final pick in the final round of the NFL Draft. Getting drafted at all is an honor, but being the last pick in the NFL Draft also has its perks.

Last season’s “Mr. Irrelevant” was quarterback Chandler Harnish, who is currently a back-up to Andrew Luck. The Colts ended up with the final pick in the draft this year as well, and they decided to draft tight end Justice Cunningham. Cunningham was the 254th overall pick in the draft.

Being the final pick in the NFL draft has become its own commodity. Since 1976, the last man taken in the NFL draft has been ceremoniously celebrated. Cunningham will be welcomed into “Irrelevant Week”, which includes several interesting accolades.

Cunningham and his family will be offered a week in Newport Beach, California. There will be a golf tournament, a regatta, and a roast in his honor. Cunningham will also receive a Disney trip, and the Lowsman Trophy.

Aside from the fandango, the pomp, and the circumstance that comes with the title of “Mr. Irrelevant”, Cunningham could very well find a place in the roster for the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts spent two early picks last season on tight ends, but they could still find use in a big blocker. At 6ft 4in and 264lbs, Cunningham could be used to assist the Colts’ revamped running game, or to keep defensive players from attacking Andrew Luck.
