Indianapolis Colts Make Trade

The Indianapolis Colts remain active, even after the doors closed on the 2013 NFL Draft. On the Monday following the draft, the Colts made a linebacker swap with the Buffalo Bills. The Colts traded linebacker/defensive end Jerry Hughes to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kelvin Sheppard.

Hughes, a former first round pick of the Colts, has made very little noise since his 2010 debut. Had Hughes lived up to his first round status, he may have been the eventual replacement for Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis. Hughes didn’t do much during his time on the field for the Colts, and didn’t really seem to fit well into the new defensive scheme last season. Hughes only had 61 tackles and five sacks in three seasons.

Sheppard was selected by the Bills in the third round of the 2011 draft. Sheppard totaled 138 tackles, two sacks, and one fumble recovery.

The Bills are also changing their defensive scheme this season, so possibly the trade will be beneficial for both teams.
