2013 NFL Draft: Round One Pick for Indianapolis Colts

The 2013 NFL Draft is finally here, and players have been flying off of the board left and right. The Indianapolis Colts had to wait several hours to make their pick with the 24th selection overall, but it seems that they have still found their man.

With their first pick in round one, the Colts selected defensive end Bjoern Werner from Florida State. The selection of Werner seems to be a direct attempt to fill one of the biggest holes on this roster. One of the few spots that the Colts did not try to fill in free agency was the hole left with the departure of Dwight Freeney, and Werner would immediately seem to become the next man up at the pass rushing position.

Werner, at 6ft 4in and 255lbs, is a big bodied raw talent that will have time to learn from new teammate Robert Mathis and new head coach ChuckPagano, as he gets adjusted to the Colts’ system. Werner was initially believed to be one of the top defensive players in this draft, but started slipping down certain draft boards, due to a sub-par performance at the NFL scouting combine. Werner didn’t run as well as expected, but the Colts may have gotten a steal, due to other needs from other teams.

Unless a trade occurs, the Colts will have to wait until the third round to make another pick, but the have definitely seemed to fill their biggest need with their initial pick in round one.
