NFL Free Agency: Which Wide Receivers Should the Indianapolis Colts Look For?

The past few weeks have been busy for the Indianapolis Colts. From the start of NFL free agency, Indianapolis hit the ground running. The Colts scooped up several players at several positions, but still seem to be coming up short, when it comes to finding a wide receiver to bring into the fold.

Colts owner Jim Irsay sparked the fire recently, by posting on Twitter that the Colts were in talks to bring in a receiver. Rumors spread quickly about who this trade or free agent might be. Nothing seemed to come of those rumors, and no certain player was ever named.

This week, the Colts brought in free agent wide out Darrius Heyward-Bey, to see how he might fit with their franchise. Very little seemed to come from those talks. Even the idea of bringing in a career underachiever like Heyward-Bey seemed to garner more yawns than excitement from fans and media. Certainly Heyward-Bey was not the blockbuster pick-up that was being teased about a few weeks earlier.

Now, as we creep ever closer to next month’s NFL Draft, it seems that the clock is ticking, and the ranks are thinning, for the Colts to find a proper piece to fit their wide receiver puzzle. Possibly the Colts will hold out on free agency, and rather draft another receiver. Possibly they will wait for more players to be cut around the time of the draft, and see what they can scoop up then.

Drafting another wide out doesn’t seem to beneficial, since the Colts traded their second-round pick in 2013, when they picked up defensive back Vontae Davis in a trade last season. The Colts also drafted two wide outs last season, and both T.Y. Hilton and LaVon Brazil were impressive when working with Andrew Luck. In the long run, the Colts may be just fine with what they have, but it never hurts to keep looking.
