Indianapolis Colts Looking Toward Matt Hasselbeck?

Veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, released by the Tennessee Titans on Monday, has already received interest from several NFL teams. One of the teams reportedly interested in the 37-year old journeyman signal-caller is the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts may be looking for a veteran presence at quarterback to back up and to mentor Andrew Luck. If the Colts do indeed pursue Hasselbeck, a deal could come as early as Tuesday.

Hasselbeck was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1998, where he was a back-up quarterback to Brett Favre. Hasselbeck was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2001, where he spent nearly a decade as a starter. In 2010, Hasselbeck went to the Titans, and battled through injuries to keep his starting job.

Bringing in the 15-year veteran could prove beneficial for young Andrew Luck. Hasselbeck has been through just about every situation a quarterback can experience in this league, aside from winning a Super Bowl. The only question about adding Hasselbeck as a back-up to Luck, is where that might leave second-year quarterback Chandler Harnish. Harnish was drafted as “Mr. Irrelevant” in the 2012 draft, chosen by the Colts with the very last pick in the final round. With the departure of second-string quarterback Drew Stanton this offseason, Harnish was expected to take over the second-string role.
