NFL Free Agency: Should Indianapolis Colts Consider Nnamdi Asomugha?

One of the biggest surprises on the first day of NFL free agency, wasn’t a player who moved to a new team, rather a former superstar who was released. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday, shortly after free agency officially began. With the Indianapolis Colts still looking for a solid starting lineup at the corner position, it might be worth the risk to bring the former Pro Bowler in.

Asomugha’s release was just as interesting in action as it was in timing. In 2011, the shutdown corner was the biggest name in free agency, and two years later, he finds himself on the chopping block. The Eagles even paid Asomugha the $4 million that was remaining, of his guaranteed $25 million on his contract, as he walked out the door.

In 2011, Asomugha signed a five-year $60 million deal, but only played out two years of it. He seemed lackluster on the field at times, and his production dipped. The Four-time All-Pro had 55 tackles last season, but only one interception. Although the jury is obviously out on the reasons for the lack of production from a player who was recently the best at his position, you have to take into effect how bad the Eagles were all of last season, in and out of the locker room. The Colts may be better off if they at least take a sniff at this talent.
