NFL Free Agency: Looks for the Indianapolis Colts

Tuesday afternoon, with the start of NFL free agency, marks the beginning of the football season. The flood gates will open, and the players will begin making their transitions to new teams. The Indianapolis Colts have more open cap room to spend then they have had in recent memory, and they might definitely make a splash in free agency this season. Listed below, in no particular order, are a few players at different positions who would work well for this reloaded team.

1.) Steven Jackson, RB – If any running back in the game can buck the trend of decline in his early 30s, it’s Jackson. Although he’s been run ragged during his time with the St. Louis Rams, you’d have to think that he would enjoy a breath of fresh air with another franchise on the rise. The Rams, like the Colts, are a young team on the way up, but they are also in a very tough division.

2.) Jake Long, OL – This pick-up would be a dream for the Colts. Long has been banged up in the past two seasons, but when healthy, he’s a Pro Bowl player every year. The Colts have some young talent on the offensive line, but a steady player like Long could help bring this misfit group together.

3.) Paul Kruger, OLB – Kruger is also being hunted by the Cleveland Browns, but if Kruger wants to win quickly, then the Colts would be a perfect fit. The Colts need a top-notch replacement for Dwight Freeney, and Kruger may also be swayed towards Indy, by his relationship for former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, Chuck Pagano.

4.) Ed Reed, S – Pagano’s history with the Ravens may help bring this future Hall-of-Famer also look towards moving to the Colts. Reed may want to finish his career with Baltimore, but he would instantly make the defense in Indianapolis better, and would a welcome addition.

5.) Reggie Bush, RB – Bush, like Jackson, is a long shot to make the choice to move to Indianapolis, but either player would make the Colts’ offense twice as potent in both the running and passing game. Both players are good blockers, and unlike Jackson, Reggie’s best years may still be ahead of him. The Colts have a solid starting back in Vick Ballard, but they could always use another workhorse in the stable.
