Vontae Davis Wins AFC Defensive Player of the Week

The good news continues to roll in for the Indianapolis Colts, as they prepare for a return to the AFC Playoffs. Veteran cornerback Vontae Davis was named as the week 17 AFC Defensive Player of the Week, after a game-changing performance during the Colts’ surprise home win over the Houston Texans. This marks the third time this season that an Indianapolis Colt defender has been honored with the Player of the Week title.

Davis had two big interceptions against the Texans. Davis was charged with the duty of guarding Pro Bowl wide out Andre Johnson, which is no easy task. Johnson still had a big game, but Davis did his best to hold the star receiver in check. Davis finished the day with the two interceptions and five total tackles.

Davis has had three interceptions over the past two games, but those are his only turnovers this season. The jury is still out when it comes to Davis, who was brought over in a trade from the Miami Dolphins. Although Davis is usually put up against opposing teams’ best receiver, he sometimes gets burned when left on that island alone. He has also seemed to be penalty-prone at times.

Davis was traded for a 2013 second round draft pick, which could end up being quite valuable for the Dolphins. Although the Colts’ draft pick is obviously not going to be as high as some would have expected at the beginning of the season, the Colts are definately going to have further holes to fill in the offseason. None of this takes away from the performance of Davis last week, and his emergence late in the season. He will be called upon a lot on Sunday, and hopes are that Vontae Davis will carry his good play over into the playoffs.
