Road Woes Continue for Indianapolis Colts

Everything seemed to be going fine for the Indianapolis Colts early in Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. The Colts came out swinging, scoring touchdowns on their first two drives. The Patriots had come out strong as well, but had missed an early field goal, giving the Colts a chance to widen their lead early in this shootout. Everything changed soon after that possession.

A punt return for a touchdown, two interception returns for touchdowns, and 59 points later, the smackdown was unmercifully over. The Patriots took the lead early in the second quarter, and never relinquished it. In fact, New England never even took their foot off the gas pedal. The Colts didn’t help themselves much, turning the ball over four times in the game, and letting New England do pretty much anything they wanted to on offense.

Prior to the fiasco in Foxboro, the Colts had won two of their last three road games, after losing ten straight away games previously. Indianapolis is now 2-3 in road games this season, with their worst losses of the year all coming away from home. The Colts have turned the ball over 13 times in those three road losses, and have given up only three turnovers in their two road wins.

Expectations were deservedly high for the Colts in this game, against a Patriots team that has given up their fair share of points and yardage this season. Still, New England has caused two or more turnovers in all but one game this season. The Colts had a chance to keep pace with the Patriots, but simply couldn’t keep up, once the game began to get out of hand.

There’s no shame in taking an old fashioned butt-whooping from the defending AFC Champions. Perhaps the end result was quite a bit more ugly than was expected by many, but if the Colts use this loss as a learning tool, then perhaps the next meeting between these teams will be competitive all the way through.
