Indianapolis Colts Make Trade for Cornerback Vontae Davis

The various rumors of an impending trade coming from the camp of the Indianapolis Colts have seemed to prosper. Reports indicate that the Colts have traded with the Miami Dolphins for the rights to cornerback Vontae Davis. Instead of trading another player for the rights to Davis, the Colts have reportedly offered up a second-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft. There is also another conditional late-round pick in next year’s draft involved in the acquisition.

Cornerback is definitely a thin spot on the Colts roster, and a veteran pick-up like Davis could very well help a defensive secondary that was lagging at the bottom of the NFL last season. Davis (5ft 11in, 203lbs) was a key part of a strong Dolphins defense last season, but still  might not be quite large enough in stature to go head to head with the likes of big-play, big-bodied wide outs in the AFC South like Andre Johnson and rookie Justin Blackmon.

Any help to the Colts’ secondary will be a step in the right direction, but low-round draft picks are at a premium for a team like the Colts that is in the middle of doing a complete overhaul on both sides of the ball.
