Colts Free Agent Target: Guard Carl Nicks

The Colts offensive line is inexperienced and old at the same time.  With the potential retirement of Jeff Saturday, there would be a giant hole in the offensive line. Here’s why we could and should bring in New Orleans Saints offensive guard Carl Nicks.

In New Orleans, the Saints are faced with plenty of players becoming free agents this offseason including the young stud Nicks. Some lucky team will probably get the opportunity to capitalize on the big contract Drew Brees should receive from the Saints and be able to sneak Nicks away from the Big Easy. Another player that could leave New Orleans through free agency is wide receiver Marques Colston. I think the Saints would be more able to afford Brees and Colston than they would be able to afford Brees and Nicks. Either way, Brees is going to get a huge contract from the Saints because he’s earned it, but Nicks is a two-time All Pro who deserves his payday as well.

Guard is one position on the offensive line where the Colts have a little bit of depth, but no one of Nicks’  quality. Also, at 6’5” and 343 lbs, Nicks would be one of the bigger linemen in the division. During his years in New Orleans, he helped running backs such as Chris Ivory, Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, and even Julius Jones produce some good rushing numbers. If anyone can make Julius Jones look good, then he certainly is a special player and could step in and make a difference for Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, and Delone Carter. One of the more amazing things about Nicks is that he’s only 26 years old, so he could provide stability at a very crucial position for the next decade or so.

Of course, this all depends on whether Peyton Manning is healthy and if Jim Irsay wants to give him his well-earned $28 million bonus. There is still some time to think about the possibility of Nicks growing in Indianapolis along with Anthony Castonzo and Ben Ijalana.
