Colts Release Nate Davis

Well, that didn’t last long!  The Indianapolis Colts today released quarterback Nate Davis, whom they picked up last month as a free agent.  Davis starred for Muncie-based Ball State during his collegiate career but has had trouble latching on with an NFL team.  Davis was drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL draft, cut by the team and then signed to San Francisco’s practice squad.  He was signed by the Seattle Seahawks in January of this year and then released in March.

There was a fair bit of excitement around Davis’s signing by the Colts, as local folks remember the talent he flashed at Ball State, but he never seemed to have had much of a chance at cracking the reported three-man QB corps that the Colts plan to keep early in the season.   Davis saw some mop-up duty against the Rams on Saturday, connecting on three of his seven pass attempts, including a 21-yard completion.

Given the ugliness that was the Colts passing game on Saturday, I would have liked to see a little more of Davis, maybe even in a couple of other exhibition games.   I guess he just no longer fit into the team’s plans.
