Colts Promote QB Stephen Morris; Waive WR Devin Street

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Wednesday that the team has promoted quarterback Stephen Morris from the team’s practice squad to their 53-man active roster and waived wide receiver Devin Street in a corresponding roster move.

Obviously, the latest roster move doesn’t seem to shed much optimism that starting quarterback Andrew Luck will actually be available to play on Thanksgiving night. However, it still can’t be entirely ruled out either.

In Luck’s potential absence, Morris is expected to be the primary backup to replacement starter Scott Tolzien–who could be making his first career start in exactly 3 years to the day: November 24, 2013, while with the Green Bay Packers.

Originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars out of Miami (Fla.) in 2014, Morris has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles organization.

Due to injuries to the quarterback position last season, Morris was initially signed to the Colts active roster in late December.

He spent this past offseason and training camp with the Colts where he impressed in preseason, completing 39 of 61 pass attempts (63.9%) for 531 passing yards, 5 passing touchdowns, and an interception for a passer rating of 106.7, as well as a rushing touchdown in all 4 preseason games.

The 6’2″, 218 pound quarterback was released shortly after the team’s 53-man roster cuts–having initially survived the last round of cuts before being subsequently re-signed to the Colts practice squad, where he’s spent all season up until his promotion Wednesday.

It’s worth noting that Morris has yet to appear in a regular season game with the Colts or any other NFL team for that matter. However, he clearly played well in preseason for Indianapolis and already has great familiarity with the team’s offense, playbook, and personnel.

To make roster room, the Colts released 3-year wideout Devin Street, who made 1 catch for 20 receiving yards–which was arguably one of the biggest catches of the Colts season against the Titans in Week 7, having appeared in 3 games with Indianapolis.
