In the wake of Dwayne Allen‘s injury, the Indianapolis Colts have signed free agent tight end Chase Coffman with their vacant spot on the team’s 53-man active roster.

The 7th-year tight end was released just after the team’s final 53-man roster cuts in early September, having previously spent this past preseason and training camp with the Colts.

Originally a 3rd round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009, Coffman has also spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, and Seattle Seahawks organizations.

In 37 career games (3 starts), Coffman has 18 receptions for 177 total receiving yards and 2 touchdown receptions. He finished preseason with the Colts, having 8 receptions for 85 receiving yards in 4 preseason games.

Currently, it’s been reported that Allen is ‘week-to-week’ with an ankle injury and is expected to miss at least a game or two.

While 2nd tight end Jack Doyle should assume the primary tight end responsibilities in Allen’s absence, the Colts could use additional depth at the position–especially as an extra blocker which Coffman figures to provide.

Along with elevated 3rd-string tight end Erik Swoope, Coffman should give the Colts another tight end on the active roster who can contribute in 2-tight end sets and even on special teams.
