The Indianapolis Colts announced on Monday that the team has waived center Khaled Holmes, tight end Cameron Clear, long snapper Forrest Hill, and offensive tackle Mitchell Van Dyk.

Of course, Holmes is the by far the biggest name of the group.

Originally a 4th round pick of the Colts in 2013, Holmes started 7 games for the Colts this past season at center. However, he never really lived up to his draft billing and was marred by both inconsistency and ineffectiveness.

In his 3-year career with the Colts, Holmes appeared in 17 games, making 9 total starts.

After the Colts selected Alabama center Ryan Kelly with their 1st round pick and picked up another prospect at the position Austin Blythe out of Iowa in the 7th round, it was clear that Holmes and even returning center Jonotthan Harrison were on the “hot seat”.

However, Holmes days as a Colts were apparently even more numbered than initially anticipated, as he was released just a day after this year’s NFL Draft concluded.

It’s clear that the Colts are serious about improving their offensive line, as the team drafted four offensive lineman total in this year’s draft including offensive tackles Le’Raven Clark (Round 3) and Joe Haeg (Round 5) respectively.

The 26 year old Holmes simply had failed to solidify the starting center position over the past two seasons, and the Colts could no longer afford to wait around–cutting bait with the former 4th round draft pick. The team figures to have a distinctly different interior offensive line next season, as the Colts seek to shore up the unit.
