The Indianapolis Colts announced Friday that the team has parted ways with linebackers coach Jeff Fitzgerald.

For those keeping count, that’s now the 7th member of last season’s coaching staff that the team has officially dismissed–with a new change among the Colts offensive line coaches also reportedly imminent.

Fitzgerald just completed his 4th season as the Colts linebackers coach. It was his 22nd season coaching at the NFL level. Prior to joining the Colts, he was the Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach from 2004-07. He’s also served as a linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals (2001-03) and Washington Redskins (1998-1999).

While both starting inside linebackers D’Qwell Jackson and Jerrell Freeman enjoyed productive seasons, the Colts didn’t get much of a pass rush from their outside linebackers. The defense ranked 22nd overall in sacks with 35 total sacks, as no linebacker other than outside linebacker Robert Mathis had more than 3 sacks.

With former Ravens linebackers coach Ted Monachino being recently named the Colts new defensive coordinator, it will be interesting to see who head coach Chuck Pagano and Monachino plan on becoming their defense’s new linebackers coach.
