According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Indianapolis Colts expect starting quarterback Andrew Luck to miss at least a month with a lacerated kidney according to a team source:

The original prognosis was 2-6 weeks out for recovery, but it looks as though Luck will be out at least a month, which was likely a safe bet from the beginning given the nature of the injury.

The 4th-year quarterback presumably was injured on a hit in the 1st play of the 4th quarter, when Denver Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan hit him low, while he was also being hit in the back by defensive tackle Vance Walker.

Despite likely being in considerable pain, Luck threw an 8-yard touchdown to Ahmad Bradshaw on the very next play and was 5 for 7 for 64 passing yards and a passer rating of 139.3 the rest of the way.

How’s that tough for you?

Either way, the Colts will once again be heavily relying on valuable veteran backup Matt Hasselbeck, who the team went 2-0 under earlier this season.

The 17-year veteran has re-established himself again as the best backup quarterback in football, having completed 48 of 76 passes (63.2%) for 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, and a passer rating of 95.0 during his 2 start stint.

With 3 of their next 5 games against the likes of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans, the Colts could very well stay atop the AFC South with Hasselbeck at the helm.

That’s what the team will he hoping for anyways until Luck is fully recovered.
