Andrew Luck Has Forged Reputation as ‘Colts Librarian’

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is no doubt incredibly intelligent, as the star quarterback graduated from Stanford with a degree in Architectural Design and has always been highly regarded for his football acumen.

According to The Wall Street Journal’s Kevin Clark, Luck is also an avid reader of literature off-the-field, where he frequently recommends books to his teammates:

"“Luck recently completed ‘The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared,’ by Swedish author Jonas Jonasson, a novel about a man’s adventures after bailing on his own birthday party,” writes Clark. “Luck felt so good about it he immediately gave his copy to Holmes. ‘He just read it and he thought it was really funny,” Holmes said.“In the NFL, where locker-room chatter usually centers on video games or hip-hop music, Luck has forged a reputation as the Colts’ very own librarian,” adds Clark."

Of course, this comes as no surprise to Colts fans, who have come to appreciate the fact that Luck is just a big athletic nerd at heart. In addition to his beard and love of literature, Luck still sports a flip phone after all.

His backup Matt Hasselbeck has listened to Luck’s suggestions on books to read:

"“He’s always saying ‘I read this great book,’ ” said Hasselbeck. “He’s recommended books on concrete architecture, Rob Lowe’s autobiography or ‘Mountains Beyond Mountains,’” a 2003 account of a doctor working to fight tuberculosis.”"

However, sometimes only with a grain of salt, as Hasselbeck asks his wife to read Luck’s suggestions first–for screening purposes, only to recommend it if it’s worthy of her husband’s reading standards:

"But just because Luck recommends a book, that doesn’t mean his teammates have to obey. Hasselbeck said there have been “seven or eight” books Luck has passed onto him. Hasselbeck gives them straight to his wife. “She’ll start reading them,” Hasselbeck said. “Then, if they’re good enough, she’ll give me the green light.”"

Regarding Luck, he’s said previously his favorite book is “Papillon”–a memoir by Henri Charrière about his escape at the Devil’s Island penal colony in French Guiana. By the same token, hopefully Luck can help the Colts soon escape from what’s so far been a losing season.
