A few things that standout :

  • Werner is backing up Walden at strong side linebacker. Werner was drafted as a pass rusher, but heading into year three he’s much better in run support and has become a more natural fit in this spot. It will be interesting to see him play this role, as opposed to attempting to rush the passer every down. This might be his best chance to stick with the team too.
  • The return jobs will probably go to the player that makes the fewest mistakes in the first preseason game, especially at kick returner. Dorsett should have the punt return job locked down. I’d expect Bray to get a few reps at returns as well.
  • Hilton might be listed as a punt returner, but something horrible will have to happen for him to start fielding punts. Unless they just want a sure handed player to fair catch (something Marvin Harrison did a few times).
  • The Colts could easily take six receivers into the season. Brown, Whalen, and Bray are all vying for that last spot. Brown has talent, but a long injury history. Whalen has trust with Luck (Stanford boys), but simply isn’t a dynamic player. Bray has worked hard and made some impressive plays in practice.
  • Herrera as the fourth middle linebacker is interesting. He’s gotten some first team reps recently (when Jackson had a day off) and was very good in run support. Muamba is someone the coaches really like as evidenced by him sticking around with the team. Irving is likely the first LB backup due to his experience.
  • The offensive line might not inspire confidence, but they haven’t been rotating players in and out of the starting unit. This is a good thing as cohesiveness is very important. If they Colts can play the same players multiple weeks in a row, that will be an improvement over last season.
  • McAfee has taken field goals just about every other practice in camp. I’d expect him to take on this role if something happens to Vinatieri (or whenever Vinatieri decides to retire).
