Marcus Mariota is an option for Colts

Marcus Mariota has been a rumored option to join Indianapolis and replace Carson Wentz. Mariota hasn’t been a full-time starter since the beginning of the 2019 season but that could change.

The former Heisman winner is no stranger to the AFC South after being drafted by the Tennessee Titans No. 2 overall in 2015. Mariota spent five seasons with the Titans, starting 61 games for them.

During his time in Tennessee, he was able to make plays through the air and on the ground. Mariota’s best season came in his second year when he passed for 3,426 yards, 26 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and added 349 yards on the ground and two additional touchdowns.

His time with the Titans came to an end after the team acquired Ryan Tannehill, who Mariota would eventually lose his job to. Once Mariota’s contract expired he signed a two-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

That’s where Mariota has spent his last two seasons, serving as Derek Carr’s backup. Mariota saw little playing time but he would often come in for packages that utilized his running ability.

If he signs with the Colts, that is something that Indy will capitalize on. Mariota has always been a dual-threat and Indianapolis could maximize his abilities by allowing him to be a run option off of Jonathan Taylor.

Mariota may not be the ideal signing but he is a possibility for the Colts as the available quarterback market continues to get smaller.
