The Colts have a ton of cap room and draft capital to overturn their roster this offseason, and that could mean they have to cut a couple of players.
Chris Ballard has transformed this roster in his first year as an NFL general manager, and he will continue to do that again this offseason.
With $80 million in cap room and seven picks coming up in this year’s draft, there are sure to be plenty of new faces in Indianapolis in 2018.
Here are a couple of players who should be worried about their status on the roster heading into this offseason.
Safety T.J. Green
T.J. Green is one of the leftovers from the Ryan Grigson era, and I’d expect Chris Ballard to try to move on from him fairly soon.
Green has two years left on his four-year $4.2 million contract, but the Colts would only be spending about $600K in dead money to release him, which would ultimately save the team about $500K.
Green improved a bit last season, and he’s got some freakish athletic talent. If Grigson was still in charge I’m sure the Colts would stick with him, but Ballard doesn’t feel any loyalty to Grigson’s former second round pick.
Running Back Robert Turbin
Robert Turbin suffered a season-ending injury in October, which allowed Marlon Mack to take on a larger role in the Colts’ offense. Mack showed enough during that playing time to prove that he should be above Turbin on the depth chart in 2018.
The Colts have plenty of questions to answer at the running back position this offseason, but I feel like there are better options than Turbin available in free agency and the draft.
The Colts wouldn’t lose a single dollar by cutting Turbin this offseason, and I’d expect Ballard to eventually make that move.
