NASHVILLE, TN - DECEMBER 28: Vontae Davis

The trade deadline is approaching quickly and with the Colts’ season looking bleak, Indianapolis should be looking to make some deals. Vontae Davis has been part of the Colts organization since 2012. Is it time to move on?

Davis is an unrestricted free agent at season’s end, and with a youth movement taking place in the Colts’ secondary, he is unlikely to be re-signed. Rashaan Melvin and rookie defensive backs Nate Hariston, Quincy Wilson, and Malik Hooker are the future in the Indianapolis secondary.

Davis missed two games last season and a significant groin injury that kept him out of action for the first three games of 2017. However, Davis’ Pro Bowl seasons of 2014 and 2015 are long behind him and he could be an upgrade in the defensive backfield for several teams competing for a playoff spot.

The New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles all rank in the bottom third of the league in pass defense. The addition of a player like Davis would improve each their chances of a Super Bowl run.

What could the Colts hope to get in return for Vontae Davis? Being that he is in the last year of his deal, Davis will not fetch a hefty return. Colts fans should expect no more than a fifth or sixth round draft pick.

Davis was a great addition for Indianapolis when the Colts traded for his services in exchange for a second-round pick in 2013, but with his Colts’ future and the season in doubt, Indy needs to get what they can for the veteran cornerback.
