The Indianapolis Colts continued to fill out the coaching staff on Monday with a very important new hire.

The Colts have found the man that will be in charge of Andrew Luck‘s development going forward and it’s Brian Schottenheimer.

In addition to Schottenheimer, Shawn Terlecky has been promoted to help with the defense.

Schottenheimer joins the Colts as the new quarterbacks coach, taking over for Clyde Christensen who left for Miami. Schottenheimer spent the past season as the offensive coordinator for the University of Georgia. Prior to that, he was the offensive coordinator for the Rams from 2012-14 and the Jets from 2006-2011.

Schottenheimer certainly isn’t short on experience and has been coaching since 1997. He’s also the son of Marty Schottenheimer, who was the head coach of the Browns, Chiefs, Washington, and the Chargers.

The move to hire Schottenheimer is raising some questions in the media.

Schottenheimer wasn’t all that successful with the Jets or Rams as a play caller, but in Indianapolis he’ll just be coaching up the quarterbacks. With the Rams, he was in charge of the likes of Sam Bradford, Austin Davis, and Shaun Hill. Schottenheimer also coached Mark Sanchez while he was with the Jets. That isn’t exactly a deeply talented group of quarterbacks.

Regardless, the most important thing for the Colts franchise going forward is the development of Andrew Luck. He’s already had to deal with the kind of change in coaching staff that would kill an average player’s development. Luck will be on his third offensive coordinator and now has a new QB coach.

While not all of the moves the Colts have made with the coaching staff have “wowed” the media, they have certainly brought in a lot of experience.
