The Indianapolis Colts announced today that the team has placed quarterback Charlie Whitehurst (hamstring) and starting offensive guard Hugh Thornton (ankle) on season-ending injured reserve.

Coming in relief of Matt Hasselbeck, Whitehurst was 9 for 14 for 78 passing yards, 0 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, and a passer rating of 78.9. However, the 10-year veteran suffered a hamstring injury late in the 4th quarter on Sunday, but the offense was never forced to come onto the field again.

For the Colts, with Hasselbeck already doubtful for next Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans with a shoulder injury, the team is incredibly thin at quarterback now that Whitehurst is also down and out for the count. Right now, the team has just recently signed Stephen Morris as the only readily available quarterback, as Andrew Luck‘s status is still uncertain for next week.

Meanwhile, Thornton suffered a significant ankle injury that requires surgery. The former 2013 3rd round pick was replaced in the starting offensive line by backup center/guard Khaled Holmes on Sunday. The 3rd-year pro ends his season having appeared in 13 games for the Colts, including 12 starts.
