Matt Hasselbeck’s Status Currently Uncertain for Jaguars Game

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Hasselbeck‘s status for this Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is currently uncertain.

The 40 year old quarterback took an awkward hit in the 3rd quarter and suffered a neck injury, as the Colts medical and training staff rushed to the field:

"“I got hit on the top of the head and kind of just got my head compressed into my neck,” said Hasselbeck following the game via Colts.com."

After being given a heat rub by trainers for his neck injury, Hasselbeck returned to the game, but with the game well out of reach, he was pulled midway through the 4th quarter.

Hasselbeck currently is unsure of his availability for next week’s game:

"“I don’t know about that yet,” Hasselbeck added. “I would hope that I could (play).”"

The 17-year veteran noted that he received x-rays and was in some pain, but we likely won’t know whether he’ll play or not until the week progresses.

With Andrew Luck likely still at least another week away, the Colts would be forced to turn to recently signed 3rd-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. The 33 year old came in late relief of Hasselbeck on Sunday night, completing 4 of 8 throws in garbage time for 51 passing yards and a quarterback rating of 70.3.

Obviously, it’s not an ideal quarterback situation for the Colts if Hasselbeck cannot play. Whitehurst is a 10-year veteran, but he doesn’t have a great overall familiarity with the team’s offense, having only been signed as Hasselbeck’s backup just a few weeks ago.

Colts fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that Hasselbeck’s neck heals in time to get the start on Sunday.
