The Indianapolis Colts announced today that the team has placed veteran running back Ahmad Bradshaw on season-ending injured reserve and re-signed running back Zurlon Tipton:

Bradshaw suffered a severe wrist injury in Sunday’s win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it will effectively end his season as well as potentially his career.

The 9-year veteran is no doubt productive when on the field, but continues to have significant durability concerns. It’s the 3rd consecutive season in which Bradshaw has suffered a season-ending injury with the Colts. This time around, such an injury came after only 6 games.

On the season, Bradshaw had 31 carries for 85 total rushing yards (2.7 ypc average). Don’t let those numbers fool you though, as he ran with purpose behind Frank Gore and was a strong asset in the team’s passing and pass blocking game–primarily handling 3rd down responsibilities.

While the team struggled finding a reliable backup option behind Gore earlier in the season, Bradshaw’s return provided a solidifying veteran presence behind him–giving the Colts a formidable 1-2 punch in their backfield.

However, the good news is that the team claimed former running back Dan “Boom” Herron off waivers last week. The 3rd year veteran was waived in preseason by the Colts following a significant shoulder injury, but appears to be fully recovered. The 5’10, 212 pound running back appeared in 4 games earlier this season with the Buffalo Bills, rushing for 37 total rush yards on 11 carries for a 3.4 yards per carry average.

With Bradshaw done for the season, Herron will likely assume primary backup duties behind Gore, while the recently re-signed Tipton will also provide running back relief.
