Phillip Dorsett Still Expects to Be Out 4-6 Weeks With Fractured Ankle

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Phillip Dorsett still reportedly expects to be out 4-6 weeks with a fractured ankle suffered in Sunday’s loss to the New Orleans Saints.

While Dorsett is still awaiting his MRI results (and even contemplating possible surgery based on such results), the initial timetable for his recovery remains the same:

This year’s first round pick injured his ankle during the first half of Sunday’s game, in what appeared to be a rather painful injury on replay. So far, Dorsett has 11 receptions for 167 receiving yards and a touchdown on the season.

While he’s shown flashes of his immense potential, the young receiver has largely been an afterthought in the offense to date. Buried behind a deep group of wideouts, Dorsett has largely seen the field on a limited basis with situational snaps.

That doesn’t mean Dorsett is a bust by any means, as young wide receivers typically take a few years to develop anyways, and the Colts simply have more polished wideouts ahead of him.

However, right now it’s a fair question as to whether a young offensive or defensive lineman could’ve made a more immediate contribution to help the team this season.

That being said, it’s encouraging news that Dorsett may only be out 4-6 weeks given what initially appeared to be a gruesome injury all things considered.

Look for backup wideout Griff Whalen to assume a large role within the offense during his absence in 4 wide receiver sets. It’s also possible the team could even look to promote a wide receiver like Duron Carter or Quan Bray from the practice squad for additional depth.

UPDATE (8:56 AM):

It looks as though Dorsett will in fact have surgery on his fractured fibula on Tuesday per Colts.com’s Kevin Bowen:

"“Rookie Phillip Dorsett will have a procedure Tuesday on his fractured fibula which will keep the Colts first-round pick sidelined for four-to-six weeks,” writes Bowen."

However, his initial timetable of recovery remains 4-6 weeks, which means he should be back before the end of the regular season.
