Jets Sheldon Richardson Suspended for Week 2 Colts Game

It was announced today that New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson will be suspended the first 4 games of the NFL’s regular season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Of course, it’s good news for the Indianapolis Colts because that means that Richardson will be out during their Week 2, September 21st matchup against the Jets on Monday Night Football.

It’s a big blow to the Jets because Richardson is one of the best defensive lineman in all of football. The former 2013 first round pick was a 2014 Pro Bowler and the AP 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year. At 6’3, 294 pounds, Richardson has been one of the main driving forces behind the Jets having such a strong defense in recent seasons.

According to ProFootballFocus (subscription), his +39.9 grade overall was the 2nd best among all NFL defensive ends behind the Houston Texans J.J. Watt. Having him out of the lineup will no doubt help the Colts offensive line breathe a little easier. However, the Jets did just recently draft highly touted rookie Leonard Williams out of USC with the 6th overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, who figures to be a stalwart along their defensive line as well and can fill-in right away.

Either way, losing Richardson couldn’t come at a better time for the Colts. The team is already avoiding the Buffalo Bills Marcell Dareus in Week 1 of this year’s regular season due to a 1-game suspension and will get to avoid another one of the AFC East’s defensive line standouts now in Richardson in consecutive weeks.
