Ngata Problem: Trade Could Help Colts

The Indianapolis Colts failed to land Ndamukong Suh, and now it looks as though they have missed out on another All-Pro defensive lineman. It was reported late this afternoon that the Baltimore Ravens have traded Haloti Ngata to the Detroit Lions for either a 4th or 5th round pick:

As a 9-year NFL veteran, Ngata has been one of the most accomplished defensive lineman in the NFL while with the Ravens. He’s been a 5x All-Pro, 5x Pro Bowler, and Super Bowl Champion. While the Colts were reportedly interested, Ngata never actually hit the open market to seriously bid on his services. The former Baltimore Ravens standout won’t get the opportunity to reunite with his former defensive coordinator in Colts head coach Chuck Pagano.

However, it could possibly spell good news for the Colts in their pursuit of Detroit Lions defensive lineman Nick Fairley. The Lions may not be as desperate to retain Fairley given that Ngata’s addition helps lessen the loss of losing potentially both Suh and Fairley in the same offseason. The Colts have already been linked to Fairley, and the talented defensive lineman could add a much needed run stopping presence in the trenches.

With the trades of Jimmy Graham, Haloti Ngata, and Sam Bradford, what was already a crazy offseason just got even wilder. The Colts could be in-line for some significant headline news themselves, when two former Miami Hurricanes in Frank Gore and Andre Johnson fly to Indianapolis early this evening to potentially sign with the team:

The Colts have so far refrained from making significant noise, but it looks as though Gore is on the way with Johnson soon to join him. Perhaps, Fairley will be not too far behind them in-line given how things are going.
